The Raven

By: Edgar Allen Poe
First published in January, 1845
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore--
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door--
"'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door--
               Only this and nothing more."

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December;
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow;--vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow--sorrow for the lost Lenore--
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore--
               Nameless here for evermore.

And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain
Thrilled me--filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating,
"'Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door--
Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door;--
               This it is and nothing more."

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
"Sir," said I, "or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you"--here I opened wide the door;----
               Darkness there and nothing more.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, "Lenore?"
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, "Lenore!"--
               Merely this and nothing more.

Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before.
"Surely," said I, "surely that is something at my window lattice;
Let me see, then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore--
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore;--
               'Tis the wind and nothing more!"

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days of yore;
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door--
Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door--
                Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
"Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou," I said, "art sure no craven,
Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering from the Nightly shore--
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night's Plutonian shore!"
               Quoth the Raven "Nevermore."

Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly,
Though its answer little meaning--little relevancy bore;
For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being
Ever yet was blest with seeing bird above his chamber door--
Bird or beast upon the sculptured bust above his chamber door,
               With such name as "Nevermore."

But the Raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing further then he uttered--not a feather then he fluttered--
Till I scarcely more than muttered "Other friends have flown before--
On the morrow he will leave me, as my hopes have flown before."
               Then the bird said "Nevermore."

Startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken,
"Doubtless," said I, "what it utters is its only stock and store
Caught from some unhappy master whom unmerciful Disaster
Followed fast and followed faster till his songs one burden bore--
Till the dirges of his Hope that melancholy burden bore
               Of 'Never--nevermore.'"

But the Raven still beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird, and bust and door;
Then, upon the velvet sinking, I betook myself to linking
Fancy unto fancy, thinking what this ominous bird of yore--
What this grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt and ominous bird of yore
               Meant in croaking "Nevermore."

This I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing
To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom's core;
This and more I sat divining, with my head at ease reclining
On the cushion's velvet lining that the lamp-light gloated o'er,
But whose velvet violet lining with the lamp-light gloating o'er,
               She shall press, ah, nevermore!

Then, methought, the air grew denser, perfumed from an unseen censer
Swung by Seraphim whose foot-falls tinkled on the tufted floor.
"Wretch," I cried, "thy God hath lent thee--by these angels he hath sent thee
Respite--respite and nepenthe, from thy memories of Lenore;
Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe and forget this lost Lenore!"
               Quoth the Raven "Nevermore."

"Prophet!" said I, "thing of evil!--prophet still, if bird or devil!--
Whether Tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore,
Desolate yet all undaunted, on this desert land enchanted--
On this home by Horror haunted--tell me truly, I implore--
Is there--is there balm in Gilead?--tell me--tell me, I implore!"
               Quoth the Raven "Nevermore."

"Prophet!" said I, "thing of evil--prophet still, if bird or devil!
By that Heaven that bends above us--by that God we both adore--
Tell this soul with sorrow laden if, within the distant Aidenn,
It shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore--
Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore."
                Quoth the Raven "Nevermore."

"Be that word our sign in parting, bird or fiend!" I shrieked, upstarting--
"Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore!
Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken!
Leave my loneliness unbroken!--quit the bust above my door!
Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!"
               Quoth the Raven "Nevermore."

And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
               Shall be lifted--nevermore!

The Haunted Ones

Since it's that Halloween time..I decided to post some apparently haunted places ;) I do love some of that. All of these you will find in Scotland and I've been to them all. They are fabulous sites to go and see & look much different than these photos, but you know I had to make them all spooky and such for the season! The first picture, I definitely felt something strange going on whilst walking around. The rest, not as much. Enjoy!!

Loudoun Castle...A large ruined mansion, it incorporates also an old tower house. The building was accidentally torched and gutted by fire in 1941, and is now the centre piece of Loudon Castle Theme park. The castle is reputedly haunted by a 'Grey Lady' who was often witnessed before its destruction, and is said to have been witnessed many times since. Another ghost said to haunt Loudon Castle is that of a hunting dog, this eerie apparition has been witnessed several times in the area, and is reported to have glowing eyes.

{I used a photo I took from the inside, because for me, it felt much more haunted, than the outside did}

Linlithgow Palace...This grand, 12th century fortress by the Union Canal is probably best known for being the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots in 1542. But although Mary has reportedly haunted every castle she’s ever stayed in, her ghost is surprisingly absent from these grounds. Instead Linlithgow Palace is said to be haunted by her mother, and wife of James V, Mary of Guise. The French queen has apparently been seen many times over the centuries, wandering Margaret’s Bower at the top of one of the stair-towers. She is not alone though, and is joined by a mysterious ‘Blue Lady’, who walks from the entrance of the palace to the door of the nearby parish church of St Michael. The ghost is believed to be seen mostly in the month of April but also in September, at about 9 am in the morning. Queen Margaret's bower is also reputed to be haunted by the ghost of either Margaret Tudor wife of James IV, or Mary of Guise wife of James V. Her apparition has allegedly been witnessed standing at the top of the tower waiting on the return of her husband from battle.

Culzean Castle...pronounced 'Cul-lane' is a magnificent castellated mansion built between 1777 and 1792, and is now in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. The castle has a number of ghosts, these include, a ghostly piper said to herald a Kennedy marriage. His erie apparition has reportedly been seen in the grounds and in an area known as 'Pipers Brae'. The piper is said to have been exploring the nearby caves beneath the castle when he mysteriously vanished. Other ghosts allegedly haunt this fine castle, one a young lady dressed in what appears to be a ball gown, an apparition that has reportedly been seen on the main stair and a spectral figure of a gentleman which has been recently witnessed by the lift lobby.

 {One will know this castle from the movie 'Highlander'. It's amazing in colour, will post more about this one another time}

Eilean Donan stands in a spectacular location at the mouth of Loch Duich. Although once quite ruinous, the castle was rebuilt in the 20th century. It was long held by the MacKenzies, and sheltered Robert the Bruce in 1306. In 1331 Randolph, Earl of Moray, executed 50 men at Eilean Donan and he had their heads spiked on the castle walls. During the Jacobite rising of 1719 Spanish troops garrisoned the castle, and the ghost of one of the soldiers allegedly haunts Eilean Donan. The erie spectre has been witnessed in the Gift Shop and is said to hold his head under his arm. Another apparition, Lady Mary, reputedly haunts one of the bedrooms.

Edinburgh Castle
Standing high on a rock in Scotland's capital, Edinburgh Castle is one of Scotland's most important buildings. The castle is home of The Honours of Scotland ie. The Scottish Crown Jewels and is reputedly haunted by several apparitions. A drummer, sometimes reported as being headless, has allegedly been witnessed on part of the castle battlements and drums are reportedly heard more often than the apparition is seen. The spectre of a dog has been reported near the main castle entrance, other manifestations include ghostly soldiers, and in the recently opened up vaulted dungeons figures have been seen.

{Enchantment}

Bonjour dolls...another weekend on the horizon...still I have no idea where the week went...maybe I was off in a deep sleep, dreaming of enchanting places of long ago, where music plays, echoing along corridors. The haunting sound quakes inside one's soul, hypnotising like a snake charmer. Fashioned into exquisite gowns with gems sparkling under the distant sun, as birds sing with happiness. Closer and closer you move, as if light as a feather floating in the air chasing music that bellows from a distance. Down the spiral with haste; cherubs guide your way, leading you to venture out into the dusky sun..a banquet awaits you. Friends gather to dine and as the night moves on..music one again fills this mysterious room, where you take to the floor and dance the night away..swaying back and forth until the clock strikes and suddenly you are left in emptyness, looking down at the now tattered dress you wear...wondering if it really was just a dream...Happy Friday!

Have a great weekend.
